Physical Therapy Department

The Physical Therapy department provides evaluation and treatment of physical status and functional disabilities as they relate to neuromuscular dysfunction, movement disorders, pain syndromes, and open wounds. Population served includes children through geriatric adults. Service is provided 365 days per year.

Scope of Services

The department offers a full range of physical and rehabilitative services including:

  • Physical Therapy
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy
  • Wound Care
  • Lymphedema Therapy

The primary diagnoses seen in the acute setting include:

  • Orthopedic
  • Cardiac
  • Multiple Trauma
  • Head Injuries
  • Cerebral Vasular Accidents (Strokes)
  • Amputations
  • Wounds
  • Vocal Impairments
  • Swallowing Disorders
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Activity of Daily Living Impairments

Primary populations for outpatient treatment include:

  • Orthopedics
  • Cumulative Trauma Disorders
  • Wounds
  • Cerebral Vascular Accidents (Strokes)
  • Amputations
  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Genetic Disorders
  • Chronic Diseases
  • Age Related Disorders
  • Cognitive Impairments
  • Burns
  • Chronic Pain
 

Interdepartmental Collaboration

The department collaborates with other health care personnel through case management meetings and daily rounds. Participation is documented in multidisciplinary records. Collaboration with nursing, radiology, and cardiopulmonary departments are done to assist with the specific aspects of patient care related to functional status, positioning of patients, and other patient care concerns.

Representatives of the Physical Therapy department participate in multidisciplinary patient care committees and task forces as appropriate.

Identification of Patient Care Needs

Patient families, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, nursing assistants, and other licensed personnel can identify patient care needs at any time during the patients' hospitalization. All patients are screened for rehabilitation services upon admission.
